Travel by plane

Ålesund lufthavn, Vigra (AES)  is the closest airport to the Geirangerfjord, and is approximately a 2.5-hour drive from the airport to Geiranger. Driving to Geiranger is a powerful experience through fantastic nature with many great vantage points. Whether you travel in winter or summer, it is important to be aware that you may encounter varying road and traffic conditions and you must plan your journey accordingly.

Summer routes, travel time by car:

  • Oslo – E6 Otta – Rv15 / Fv63 Geiranger: 6,5 hours
  • Bergen – E39 Stryn – Rv15/Fv63 Geiranger: 6,5 hours
  • Trondheim – E6 Dombas / Otta – Rv15 / Fv63 Geiranger: 5,5 hours
  • Ålesund- E39 Stordfjordvegen – Fv650 Sjøholt – Fv63 Linge – Ferry to Eidsdal – Fv63 Geiranger (Ferry info at www.fjord1.no ) : 2,5 hours

During the winter season, some mountain passes may be closed due to a lot of snow and the risk of avalanches. County road 63 to Geiranger may be closed in winter from late autumn to early summer. This applies to both the road from the east that comes over Strynefjellet and the road over Trollstigen. The exact time the road closes and opens depends on the amount of snow and weather conditions and changes from year to year. Travel by bus

If you want to travel by bus in Geiranger and visit places such as Ålesund, Ørsta, Hornindal or Stryn, you can use the local buses run by FRAM. On their website you will find timetables for local buses in addition to information and timetables for ferries and long-distance buses, including buses from Oslo.
